Toyota‘s midsize off-road brute returns sharper, tougher, and more trail-ready than ever. But does the Trailhunter trim earn its badge, or is it just desert cosplay?

Who is this for—and who should skip it?
The Trailhunter is for people who know the difference between articulation and articulation. Weekend warriors, overlanders, backwoods photographers, and anyone allergic to paved roads will find it a deeply satisfying companion. It’s built for the long way around, not just the drive-through.

If your idea of adventure is parallel parking at Trader Joe’s or mounting curbs at soccer practice, save your money. The suspension is firm, the tires are loud, and the fuel economy, while better than expected for something this chunky—is still not what you’d call economical. The plug-in hybrid you were hoping for? Not here yet. You’ll need to wait and see what Toyota has brewing for the next RAV4.

MSRP for the Trailhunter starts just north of $52,000 and climbs from there depending on configuration. That might seem steep, but Toyota’s reputation for longevity, plus the inclusion of a serious trail kit, means this might be the first factory truck you won’t have to upgrade with $10,000 in accessories immediately.
