Mercedes-AMG Electric GT 4-Door Coupe Sounds and Feels Like a Real V8

Mercedes-AMG is launching its all-new GT 4-Door Coupe as a high-performance electric car that brings more than 1,000 horsepower and groundbreaking technology. It combines sophisticated axial flux motors and advanced battery systems. There’s also a unique V8 mode that delivers realistic engine sound along with vibrations and the feel of shifting for the first time in the performance segment.

This model carries the legendary AMG V8 heritage into the electric era by delivering not just performance, but the emotional driving experience that loyal customers expect. Engineers focused heavily on making the car feel authentic to AMG rather than just making it fast.

We spoke to Michael Schiebe, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG for Production, Quality and Supply Chain Management, during a roundtable ahead of the reveal in LA. He explained how the team worked to preserve that unmistakable AMG character in an all-electric package.

Advanced Tech Supports the Emotional Driving Experience

AMG developed axial flux motors using the same high-performance electric battery technology from its record-setting GTX car. The motors deliver tremendous competitive advantage and will remain exclusive to AMG models. “We spent a lot of time, a lot of resources, a lot of knowledge, to develop that electric motor,” said Schiebe.

The AMG-GT also uses a direct-drive, liquid-cooled battery that can charge up to 600 kilowatts with repeatable high-performance on the track without thermal limits. Active aerodynamics, including a rear wing and underbody venturi, optimize efficiency and range while maintaining downforce when needed.

AMG Brings Electric V8 Mode to Performance Segment

The GT 4-Door Coupe introduces a completely new category that AMG calls electric V8s. It perfectly embodies everything that AMG stands for with sophisticated, groundbreaking technology combined with the brand’s traditional strengths in performance and style.

“It is actually the car that carries the V8 legacy of AMG into the electric era and this is why we are so proud,” said Schiebe. After speaking with customers and dealers about what an electric car needs in order to succeed with AMG buyers, the team decided to benchmark the vehicle against its own V8 cars.

“Most of our US dealers are petrolheads. They love the combustion engines, and it is so realistic because when you jump into the car behind the steering wheel you do not only have the V8 sound you also have vibrations.” – Michael Schiebe

They added a realistic V8 mode for the first time in the performance segment. The instrument cluster even changes into an RPM meter with gear shifts available through the paddles behind the steering wheel. This gives drivers the full feeling of a combustion engine.

V8 Sound and Vibrations Created With Music Industry Talent

The sound was key to the process, so engineers hired talents from the music industry and teamed them with V8 engine experts, transmission specialists, and exhaust developers to create an authentic experience. This team, nicknamed the Ministry of Sound, tested extensively at the Immendingen proving grounds in Baden-Württemberg, Germany until the sound felt truly like an AMG.

“When we started to develop that drive mode the ambition of the AMG engineers was very high because they said if we sell it as a V8 mode, it needs to be really realistic otherwise it is not authentic,” said Schiebe.

“It is so realistic that some of the dealers asked me, Michael, can you open the hood, because they did not believe me that there is no combustion engine in it.” – Michael Schiebe

The V8 mode is easy to engage with the Sport Plus button on the steering wheel activating a full 360-degree experience. This includes interior and exterior sound, gear shifts, and seat vibrations. The system even uses the headlights as speakers to throw sound forward when the car approaches.

Loyal AMG Customers Are the Real Test for This Electric Future

Schiebe addressed concerns about whether longtime AMG loyalists who know the mechanical character intimately will accept the electric version. The team conducted blind test drives and gathered constant feedback from customers and dealers throughout development.

“From my point of view, and this is also the feedback that we received so far. this will be the first electric car to really win over the petrolheads” – Michael Schiebe

“When the team came back with the first version of this V8 sound, and then the team showed me the car in Immendingen on a proving ground, and they started for the first time to activate the exciters in the seats ,that was the first moment when I said yes this can really be it,” said Schiebe. It’s all about staying true to the feeling and emotion of the brand.

“I am already a long-term driver of that car and I switch on S Plus every morning, still, and I am driving this car now for a few weeks. I am not tired of it.” – Michael Schiebe

The distinct drive modes let the AMG GT 2-Door Coupe be something of a transformer. Comfort delivers silent efficient electric driving while Sport Plus unleashes the full V8 experience.

Future-Proof Performance With AMG DNA

The new Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe will be priced in line with its combustion-engine predecessor. It will launch with multiple variants following a similar strategy to the previous 53, 55 and 63 models.

This approach makes the transition to electrification much smoother for existing AMG customers. The car successfully bridges the gap between traditional combustion performance and the benefits of pure electric driving.

In the end, the GT 4-Door Coupe respects the brand’s heritage while embracing the future. It delivers the emotional connection AMG owners love without forcing them to give up the soul of the drive.
